Exhibition Dates: 26th September – 11th October 2019
Schoolhouse Gallery is open Monday – Friday, 9am – 3pm.

‘The Spectators’ invites viewers into a world of looming shadows, dark archways and ominous bodies of water to ask what it means to be an onlooker, a bystander, a spectator.

Georgia Spain’s debut solo exhibition features 10 paintings that explore spectatorship, herd mentality and being in the spotlight. How does it feel to be watched? What does it mean to stand by?

Underpinning the work are themes of fear, isolation, grief and our yearning for human connection in a time of ecological collapse.

Within each scene a cast of characters assemble to create an eerie, unsettling atmosphere of spectacle.

Georgia Spain is a London born visual artist and musician currently based in Castlemaine, Victoria, making work on Dja Dja Wurrung land. Her studio practice is focused primarily on large-scale figurative painting.
Through family photographs and memories, film, and popular culture Spain’s paintings connect fictional narratives with personal experiences, where the two become entwined to sit somewhere between truth and invention.
